Common questions

Does this work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. If a page has no readable text layer, the converter automatically runs OCR (Tesseract) on it and reconstructs the rows and columns from the image. The free tool OCRs the first 5 scanned pages per request. For full OCR on longer documents, the desktop app has no OCR page cap.
How accurate is the table detection?

For native PDFs (PDFs generated by Word, Excel, accounting software, etc.), the extractor is very accurate because it reads the real text coordinates. For scanned PDFs, accuracy depends on scan quality, contrast, and whether the table has clear column spacing. Complex merged cells, nested tables, and unusual layouts are the hardest cases.

Why are some of my tables missing or broken?

A few common reasons: (1) the PDF is a scan and the scan quality is low, so OCR cannot separate columns; (2) the table has heavily merged cells or rotated text; (3) the page has multiple overlapping tables the detector can’t separate. When the online tool falls short, the desktop app ships with additional table engines and gives better results on tricky PDFs.

Why not just use Excel's built-in 'Get Data from PDF' feature?

Power Query’s PDF connector is a legit option on Windows Excel 2019+ and Microsoft 365. If your PDF has a native text layer and you’re already in Excel, it works well and the output is a proper Excel Table you can refresh.

Use this tool instead when: (1) the PDF is scanned, because Power Query has no OCR and ours does; (2) you’re on Mac, Linux, or an older Excel, because Power Query needs a recent Windows Excel; (3) you want zero friction: drag, drop, download, with no menus to navigate or 29 query results to preview one at a time.

The output here is also a native Excel Table (with filters and header styling), so once you download the .xlsx you get the same Ctrl+T ergonomics you would with Power Query.
