Does this work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. If a page has no readable text layer, the converter automatically hands it to an AI vision model that reads the image and reconstructs the rows and columns. The free tool converts up to 3 scanned pages per upload. For longer scanned documents, PDF2Excel has no page cap and runs fully offline.
How accurate is the table detection?

For native PDFs (PDFs generated by Word, Excel, accounting software, etc.), the extractor is very accurate because it reads the real text coordinates. For scanned PDFs, the AI vision model is robust to typical scan quality issues but works best with clean, high-contrast scans. Complex merged cells, nested tables, and unusual layouts remain the hardest cases.

What is the maximum file size and page count?

The free tool accepts PDFs up to 5 MB. Typed PDFs go up to 30 pages. Scanned PDFs are capped at 3 pages per upload, read by an AI vision model. There’s also a daily limit of 3 successful conversions per visitor, which resets at midnight UTC. For larger documents or unlimited daily usage, PDF2Excel has no file size, page, or daily limits.
Can I convert password-protected PDFs?

No, neither the free online tool nor PDF2Excel desktop can convert password-protected PDFs directly. Encryption hides the page content from the extractor before it ever sees the text. You’ll need to unlock the PDF first using a separate tool (Adobe Acrobat, Smallpdf, or any free PDF unlocker), then convert the unlocked copy here.
Why are some of my tables missing or broken?

A few common reasons: (1) the PDF is a scan and the scan quality is low, so the AI cannot separate columns; (2) the table has heavily merged cells or rotated text; (3) the page has multiple overlapping tables the detector can’t separate. When the online tool falls short, PDF2Excel ships with additional table engines and gives better results on tricky PDFs.

Which languages does the AI support for scanned PDFs?

The AI vision model handles English, Chinese, Japanese, and most Latin-script European languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish). Accented characters and non-Latin scripts beyond CJK have lower accuracy. No language picker is needed; the model handles whatever it sees. Typed PDFs are read directly from the text layer in any language.
Does the Excel output use real tables with filters?

Yes by default. Each detected table is written as a native Excel Table (a ListObject) with filter buttons, header styling, and banded row colours, ready to use as soon as you open the file. Toggle ‘Format as Excel tables’ off in the tool options if you prefer plain cells.
Why not just use Excel's built-in 'Get Data from PDF' feature?

Power Query’s PDF connector is a legit option on Windows Excel 2019+ and Microsoft 365. If your PDF has a native text layer and you’re already in Excel, it works well and the output is a proper Excel Table you can refresh.

Use this tool instead when: (1) the PDF is scanned, because Power Query has no OCR and ours uses AI to read scanned ones; (2) you’re on Mac, Linux, or an older Excel, because Power Query needs a recent Windows Excel; (3) you want zero friction: drag, drop, download, with no menus to navigate or 29 query results to preview one at a time.

The output here is also a native Excel Table (with filters and header styling), so once you download the .xlsx you get the same Ctrl+T ergonomics you would with Power Query.
