Yes. Every install includes 10 free conversions with everything unlocked, OCR included, so you can try the real app on your own documents before paying. Install it from the Microsoft Store, convert away, and enter a license key whenever you are ready. For a quick one-off file there is also a free online converter on this site, one file at a time with a 5 MB limit.
PDF, DOCX, DOC, PPTX, PPT, XLSX, XLS, the macro-enabled DOCM, PPTM and XLSM, plus HTML, HTM, CSV, JSON, XML, EPUB, MSG, EML, RST, RTF, TXT and MD. Images (PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, WEBP) and scanned PDFs are read with OCR. ZIP archives are unpacked and everything inside is converted.
Yes to both. Office2MD runs entirely on your computer: no file is uploaded, no data is sent to any server, and no internet connection is needed to convert. The only step that goes online is activating a license key, which sends the key and a device name to my server and nothing else.
Yes. Built-in text recognition (OCR) reads scanned PDFs and image files and turns what it finds into Markdown text. It runs on your PC, so scans are never uploaded. Mixed documents work too: pages with real text keep it, scanned pages get recognized, and the progress shows which page it is on.
You decide. Office2MD can save them to a folder next to the Markdown file and link them from it, embed them directly in the file, or leave them out. Set the default once in Settings and it applies to every conversion.
No. Online converters usually stop at 5 to 10 MB; Office2MD takes files of any size. A 300-page scanned PDF simply takes a while, and you watch it go page by page.
No. Office2MD needs Windows 10 or 11. It does run inside a Windows virtual machine on a Mac (Parallels, VMware Fusion, UTM). For single files on any device, the free online converter works in the browser.
No. Office2MD is a standalone app with the converter and the OCR engine built in. Nothing else to download, nothing to configure.
A Single User license covers up to 3 of your own PCs, for example a desktop, a laptop and a work machine. The Team license covers 15 users with one key. Need more? Email me.
Yes, there is a direct installer. It is the same app with the same free conversions; it just updates through the app instead of the Store. Windows shows a SmartScreen warning on it; choose More info, then Run anyway.
For one short document, go ahead. For anything else they get in the way: you have to upload the file, long documents get cut off or summarized, tables come back mangled, and it is one file at a time. Office2MD converts the whole file, on your PC, a hundred at once if you like. Plenty of people use it to prepare documents before they go into an AI tool.
If you live in a terminal, Pandoc is excellent and free. It is also built for a different job: it cannot read PDFs, Excel files or scans at all (PDF is only an output for it), and converting a folder means writing a script. Office2MD handles all of those, OCR included, and gives you a window to drop files into. Plenty of people use both.
Markdown is plain text with simple formatting, and it is what notes apps (Obsidian, Notion), static websites (Hugo, Jekyll), documentation systems (GitHub, GitBook) and AI tools all work with. It is also how people build a second brain: convert your old Word docs, PDFs and spreadsheets once, and they become linked, searchable notes that are usable everywhere, forever.
