Insert places the chart picture near the selected cell. If a shape or picture is selected instead, for example the chart you inserted a minute ago, Excel reports no selected range and the insert stops. Click any cell, then press Insert again. Your previous picture is only replaced after the new one is placed, so nothing gets lost either way.
