DatePop is coming soon to Microsoft Marketplace. Once it is listed, you add it from inside Excel in a minute, or ask your IT team to deploy it. Nothing is installed on your computer outside Excel. The DatePop page shows when the listing is live.
What you need #
- Excel on Windows or Mac with Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 and later, or Excel on the web in a current browser.
- An internet connection when the pane opens. The add-in’s code is served from addins.pythonandvba.com; your workbook data is never sent anywhere.
- No macros, no admin rights on your computer and no account with me.
Install it yourself once DatePop is listed #
These are the steps that will apply once DatePop is listed on Microsoft Marketplace:
- Open Excel and a workbook.
- On the Home tab, click Add-ins, then More Add-ins (on some versions: Insert > Get Add-ins).
- Search for DatePop (by Bosau Digital) and click Add.
- A DatePop group appears on the Home tab with the buttons Date picker and Insert today. Click Date picker to open the pane.
You add it once per Microsoft account. It then shows up in Excel on Windows, Mac and the web wherever you sign in with that account.
Personal Microsoft account? Once DatePop is listed, install from inside Excel as shown above. The Get it now button on the Microsoft Marketplace website asks for a work or school account and stops personal accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail and similar) at Switch to an account that has permission. The Add-ins menu in Excel works with every Microsoft account, including the free Excel on the web at office.com.
Keyboard shortcut #
DatePop registers two keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D on Windows and Command+Option+Shift+D on Mac write today’s date into the selected cells, even while the pane is closed. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P (Command+Option+Shift+P on Mac) is registered for Show DatePop, but Excel can refuse to open a store add-in’s pane from a shortcut, so the Date picker button on the Home tab is the dependable way to open it. If another add-in uses the same keys, Excel may ask which one to keep. Everything else in DatePop works with the mouse or by touch, so the shortcuts are only an extra. The pane lists them under Keyboard shortcuts in its menu.
Deployed by your IT admin #
Many companies deploy add-ins centrally from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Once DatePop is listed and your admin deploys it, it appears in the Add-ins menu under your organization’s add-ins without you doing anything; it can take up to 24 hours after the deployment. If your organization blocks add-ins from the store, ask your IT team to deploy DatePop for you.
Updates #
There is nothing to update. DatePop loads its current version each time the pane opens, so you always have the latest release. The changelog lists what changed.
