SimpleGantt started as a VBA tool that generated an HTML Gantt chart from a workbook. The SimpleGantt add-in replaces it: a live chart on the sheet that also works in Excel on the web, without macros. This page explains what carries over.
Your license key works #
If you bought SimpleGantt (VBA), your key unlocks the add-in at no extra cost. On a chart, open More options > License, paste the key from your original purchase email and click Add key. Both products use the same license, so they also share its device slots. If the add-in says the device limit is reached, remove computers you no longer use in your account.
Your data carries over, your old file does not #
The add-in is a new product and does not open the VBA tool’s workbooks or settings. Your plan is just a table, though, so moving it takes a minute:
- Copy your task list (task, start, end, progress and any other columns) into a workbook, or keep it where it is.
- Turn it into an Excel table with Ctrl+T.
- Click one cell of the table, insert SimpleGantt and click Use selection.
SimpleGantt recognizes the usual column names. Prepare your plan table lists them.
What is different #
| VBA version | Add-in |
|---|---|
| VBA add-in for desktop Excel on Windows and Mac | No macros; Windows, Mac and Excel on the web |
| Generates a chart in the browser on demand | Live chart on the sheet, redrawn when a cell changes |
| Updated by replacing the add-in file | Always current, nothing to update |
| Interactive HTML chart | HTML file and snapshot link, plus PowerPoint, PDF and images |
On top of that, the add-in brings dependency arrows, calculated dates, the critical path, baselines, holidays and themes that follow Office.
The VBA version #
The VBA tool keeps working on the computers where it is installed, and its documentation stays available on the docs page as SimpleGantt (VBA version). It no longer receives new features.
