You open Google’s App passwords page and Google says “The setting you are looking for is not available for your account”, or you can’t find App passwords anywhere. There are four common reasons.
1. 2-Step Verification is off #
Google only offers app passwords when 2-Step Verification is on. Turn it on (2-Step Verification), then open App passwords again.
2. Your account uses only security keys #
If 2-Step Verification is set up only with security keys, or the account is in Google’s Advanced Protection Program, Google does not offer app passwords. Add another second step, such as Google prompts or an authenticator app, or connect another email account.
3. Your company’s admin turned app passwords off #
For Google Workspace accounts (Gmail with your company’s domain), the admin decides. SheetCourier then says:
Your organization’s Google admin has turned off app passwords, so Google won’t let SheetCourier sign in. Ask your admin to allow app passwords, or connect Outlook on this PC if you have it.
Click What to tell your admin on the Connect Gmail screen. Admins find the setting in Google’s help for 2-Step Verification for Workspace: users need to be allowed to turn on 2-Step Verification, and app passwords must not be blocked.
4. The account belongs to a school or a managed device #
Accounts from schools and some organizations can’t create app passwords at all. Use another email account, or Outlook on this PC if your organization uses Outlook.
